Pro dignity: why we call them professionals, not gig workers
The language we use shapes the relationships we build. Here's why VanHub treats service providers as professionals — and what that means in practice.
At VanHub, we never use the word 'gig worker.' We call the people on our platform 'professionals' or 'pros.' This isn't semantics — it's a fundamental choice about how we view the relationship. A gig worker is disposable; a professional is a partner. That distinction shapes every product decision we make.
Consider payouts. Most gig platforms pay weekly or monthly, with minimum thresholds and payout fees. We pay within 24 hours, no minimum, no fees. Why? Because a professional's earnings are their money — they shouldn't have to wait for it. When Rajesh the electrician finishes a job at 8 PM, he should be able to pay his child's school fees the next morning. That's dignity.
Consider pricing. On most platforms, workers bid against each other, driving prices (and their earnings) down. We set rate bands — pros charge within a defined range based on their rating and experience. A 4.7-rated pro with 200+ jobs can charge 25% more than a new pro. Quality is rewarded, not undercut. Pros know that doing great work leads to higher earnings, not just more bookings.
Consider verification. We don't just background-check pros and call it done. We issue them a Pro ID card and an authorization letter — physical, printable documents that identify them as VanHub-verified professionals. When a pro shows this at a customer's door, they're not a random gig worker; they're a credentialed professional. That changes the power dynamic.
Consider support. Our pro support team is staffed 7 AM to 11 PM, 7 days a week. Pros can call, chat, or WhatsApp us — and they get a human, not a bot. If a customer is abusive, we side with the pro. If a payment is delayed, we fix it immediately. Pros are not lines in a database; they're the reason we exist.
The result of this approach: our pros stay. Our annual pro retention rate is 84%, compared to the industry average of 45%. Pros recommend VanHub to their friends. They build their reputations here. When we call them professionals, we mean it — and they feel it.
